At university in Japan I teach a unit called 'Americanism.' That unit focuses not on American Culture, which is a common elective to be found in most colleges and universities, rather it focuses specefically on the political, social, philosophical, economic and religious notion of America as a cultural brand called Americanism. More specefically it explores this notion through the key construct of American Corporate Capitalism, which is the fundamental tenent of Americanism.
Whilst this documentary was very useful for its economic content, specefically in terms of being able to introduce quite complex economic terms such as: Credit Default Swaps, Sub-Prime Loans, Leverge and Mark-to-Market Accounting to second-language non-business majors that's really it's only defining merit.
The aforementioned aside, if one views the narrative of `Inside Job' from a more critical perspective, that is to say, if we consider this film as part of the Historical Record and analyze it from an academic standpoint - which is clearly what we should do. Then this film presents itself in an altogether more flawed light. What I mean by that is one cannot help but notice that this AMERICAN-made film presents itself not as that, but rather as having been made from afar. Specifically it views its subject matter as if it were made by a pompous European viewing the 2008 economic meltdown from across the Atlantic with a very strong pair of binoculars.
To summate, the AMERICAN financial crisis was created by Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Bear Stearns et al. who were all operational under Federal and State Laws in AMERICA, to be precise, these companies were founded on the principle of AMERICAN Corporate Capitalism, and were simply playing the rules set by the U.S. Congress and agreed to by the AMERICAN public. As they say, `Don't hate the player, hate the game.' Just as each an EVERY German adult national who lived between 1939-1945 was guilty of genocide because of their complacency in failing to uprise against the Third Reich, so every single AMERICAN citizen is responsible for the economic melt-down because they were also complicit is allowing the system that spawned Enron, Lehman etc. to prevail. Had the collapse not occurred, and had people still money in their wallets, then the system would be unchanged to this day and facile, toothless movements like `Occupy Wall Street' would not be acting out their part as the token 'outraged' masses in its current theatre run.
If a nation like America was founded on genocide, bloated by slavery and achieved wealth by standing on the sidelines of WWII until it could predict the winner - after which it found itself the only developed country with an economy in tact, from which the American Empire was built, how it claim to have any functional moral compass? Why is this critical fact ignored in this film? Why are the defendants portrayed as being somehow 'foreign' or 'distant' to ordinary Americans when they have the SAME mindset as ordinary Americans - who, I have no doubt, would act in EXACTLY the same way given the opportunity!
Looking at America's history of atrocities, violations, war-crimes, greed, theft, warmongering, environment and cultural devastation and utter hypocrisy, the Meltdown (like 9/11) is really a drop in the ocean in terms of its relevance in the larger puzzle and the History of the World; it really is nothing more than can be expected from a Nation whose parallels to Hitler's Third Reich are striking and which is responsible for just about every woe in the world and has been since it was founded that very, very short time ago.
In conclusion. Whilst the Meltdown may be regrettable to some, it is merely the effect of a much more insipid and cancerous prevailing ethos that dyes each and every American who pledges `Allegiance' to the flag with the same colour. If the filmmakers wanted to really address the very serious issues raised in this film then they need to go back and strip the covers of the framework of Americanism and American Corporate Capitalism to reveal the inner workings and THEN address those; for until someone is brave enough to stop the bus and open up the engine to see what `that' noise it, the system will never change and we (the rest of the world) will continue to pay the price of America's Empire.

This should be required viewing for any politics class studying the interrelationships between Business, Government and Society. I'll quote Robert Gnaizda from Greenlineing Institute - "It's a Wall Street government" - Your blood might boil as you see the evidence proving that statement. Facts are presented and people speak for themselves ( sometimes after they've spoken for themselves Mr. Hubbard - you'll get the reference of you watch the film.). This film got the Oscar dirt best documentary on 2010.
